22 Things Christians Need To Stop Doing…Now! by Chuch Tate

Christian preachers are often talking about the “mission” of God’s people, and this is absolutely right. Christians have a lot to do in this world, and our task to make disciples and take the gospel to the nations is immediate and apparent. But there are also other things that we should seek to cease in our lives. Here, Chuck Tate gives us 22 key things and attitudes that we need to cut out of our lives.

1. Quit expecting the world to like you. Jesus said it would hate you (John 15:18-27, Matthew 10:22).

2. Quit throwing your own teammates under the bus.

“We’re called to build each other up, not tear each other down. In fact, Jesus said that our love for each other proves to the world that we are really His true disciples (John 13:35, 1 Thessalonians 5:11).”

3. Quit gossiping.

This includes sharing “juicy prayer requests” with no intention of actually praying (Psalms 34:13, Psalms 101:5, Ephesians 4:29).

4. Quit replacing prayer with “good vibes” and “positive thoughts.”

No. Just no. Prayer moves the hand of God and the hand of God moves the world. “Prayer is much more effective than making someone feel warm and fuzzy inside. By the way, I’m not saying positive thoughts and good vibes are wrong (and they do make you feel good), I’m just saying prayer trumps them both (2 Corinthians 1:11, Philippians 1:19, Ephesians 6:18, James 5:16).”

5. Quit saying repentance isn’t necessary. It is. Jesus said so.

“And just so you know, there are 53 references to repentance in the New Testament. Now go repent (Matthew 5:17, Acts 3:19, Romans 2:5, 2 Peter 3:9, 1 John 1:9).”

6. Quit saying that the “portions of the Bible that make you feel uncomfortable” are irrelevant and nothing more than dated writings.

“All 66 books, 1,189 chapters, and 31,102 verse are the inspired Word of God. So the next time you think about throwing out the Old Testament, just remember that Jesus quoted it numerous times in all four gospels (John 1:1-4, John 1:14, 2 Timothy 3:16).”

7. Quit expecting unbelievers/non-Christians to understand the Bible and/or to live like Christ.

“It’s hard enough for Christians to live like Christ and it’s impossible to do so without Him (until the blinders are removed) (2 Corinthians 4:4, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Galatians 5:24-25).”

8. Quit acting like the Great Commission (Go into all the world to preach the gospel) is the Great Suggestion.

“It’s a command. Go already (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15).”

9. Quit thinking that it’s OK to be silent about your faith.

“Yes, it’s just as important to represent Jesus by how we live, but someone can’t respond to the Good News without hearing it … and they can’t hear it if no one opens their mouth (Matthew 10:27, Romans 10:14-15).”

10. Quit being more passionate about your political affiliation than your relationship with Jesus.

“If 99 percent of what you post on social media consists of bashing government officials and presidential candidates—you’re doing more damage than good (Romans 13:1-7, 2 Chronicles 7:14).”

11. Quit using the Bible to beat the “hell” out of people.

“That doesn’t work. Ever. I don’t care if you’re right—if you’re a jerk, nobody is listening. Love wins! (No, I don’t mean the book by Rob Bell.) (1 Corinthians 13).”

12. Quit your legalistic rants, knee-jerk reactions, and judgmentalism.

“You’re turning people off. You’re making good news bad news. Jesus befriended sinners. Try it and great things will happen (Mark 2:17, Luke 5:27-32, 1 Timothy 1:15-16).”

13. Quit calling yourself a Christian if you believe there are multiple paths that lead to salvation.

“Jesus said that He’s the only way to heaven. If you don’t believe Him, you’re not a Christ-follower (John 14:6, 1 John 2:4).”

14. Quit living like everybody’s going to heaven and nobody’s going to hell.

“Jesus died so the whole world could be saved, but He said the path to heaven is narrow and few find it. And for the record, He preached more about hell than heaven … but He did it without using a bullhorn and manipulative scare tactics. (Matthew 7:13-14).”

15. Quit acting like you’re better than those who don’t know Jesus.

You’re not (Luke 18:19, Acts 10:34, Romans 2:11-13).

16. Quit criticizing loving believers who take a biblical stand for godly morals.

“Jesus didn’t call us to be politically correct. Develop some backbone. And yes, I said wimp. And yes, I will repent for calling you a wimp (Acts 4-6).”

17. Quit pointing out the speck in your neighbor’s eye while ignoring the plank in your own eye.

“By the way, I can hardly see my computer as I type this because of the log in my own eye (Matthew 7:3-5).”

18. Quit being a jerk, period.

“Whatever your position is (on anything), if you can’t communicate it in love, you’re a clanging cymbal and your message is worthless. So yeah, I probably shouldn’t have called you a wimp in No. 16 (1 Corinthians 13).”

19. Quit defending sin. Quit hating sinners.

“These are equally important. Oh yeah, and lose your critical lens (Psalm 97:10, Matthew 22:37-39).”

20. Quit using the phrase “he who’s without sin cast the first stone” out of context.

“The next thing Jesus said was, “Go and sin no more” (John 8:1-11).”

21. Quit using grace as a license to live however you want.

“Jesus is grace, so don’t trample Him under your feet (Romans 6:1-2, 1 John 2:4, Hebrews 10:26-31).”

22. Quit using the phrase (when inviting people to church) “come as you are” if you’re going to complain when they start showing up (Mark 2:17, Luke 5:27-32).

Thank you for visiting and reading our post. God bless you!

1. “Get married”

In a generation where many are opting to co-habit, and living by the ‘Come-we-stay’ option; choose to get married. There is security in officially getting married, both of you feel most safe to give your all in the home. In a co-habit arrangement it is easy to walk away, easy to sometimes feel threatened, easy for the person who pays the rent or the bills more to make the other feel unwanted.

2. “Keep the bedroom warm”

The bedroom is the epicenter of the home, the mum and dad determine the climate in the house. All the other rooms are a reflection of the bedroom; if the bedroom is warm, the whole house will be warm. Handle your business well in the bedroom.

3. “Hang family photos”

Family photos allows every one in the family to reflect. When things are tough, looking at smiling photos of your family will inspire you to put effort in your valuable family. Sometimes we forget what is important, photos remind us. Display also plaques with loving quotes to remind every one what the family should stand for.

 4. “Eat together”

People connect best when having a meal, that is why most dates happen where eating is involved. Use the same practice as a family. At the dinning table, love happens, people laugh and talk.

5. “Work on communication”

Listen to each other, let no one – mother, father or even the smallest child feel locked out or chocked. Too many children grow quiet and withdrawn when the dad or mum gets home.

6. “Don’t argue in front of the kids”

Yes, you and your spouse will have moments you disagree; but never let the kids witness you two fighting. Shield your children, take these serious conversations and confrontations to the bedroom and solve them there, come out as a united team.

7. “Pray together”

A family that prays together loves together. Prayer softens and warms hearts. Do it together, not alone.

8. “Command your morning”

Start each morning on a high and positive note, speak life and love that sets the tone for the day.

9. “Dance”

Pump up the volume, dance and laugh. Act silly, home should be fun.

10. “Play some good music”

People have different taste in music, but as often as possible, you as the father or mother, play good and positive music. Play love songs, spiritual music, inspirational music; your children will remember you for that. Many people find love through music.

11. “Have movie nights”

Yes, you and your spouse are busy. But set aside at least one night a week or two weeks to sit down as a couple or family and watch a movie; preferably a movie your children will like and you as the adult you make yourself enjoy. The number one thing children long for is time with their parents. Just two hours of watching something together will show a lot of love.

12. “Entertain visitors”

Hosting visitors brings out the best in you, it challenges you to be more alert about your home because when it’s always you and your spouse and children you can get too comfortable. When people visit you, you feel proud of your home and project love. Visitors cause us to analyze our home.

13. “Play games”

Play competitive games as a family; whether video games, computer games, outdoor games or board games. Games unite us if we play them together, avoid games played alone.

14. “Decorate the house together”

When giving the house a make over or moving into a new house, let the taste and needs of every one in the family be put into consideration. The house should be a haven for each one.

15. “Kiss as mum and dad”

Kissing is an act of love. Let the children witness mum giving dad a kiss and dad planting kid-friendly kisses on mummy.

16. “Hug often”

As a family, set the tradition of hugging and showing affection. A hugged up person feels at home. Many people are grumpy and a warm hug will calm them.

17. “Do house chores together”

Yes man, chores are not for women alone. Do things as a team, divide chores; assign responsibilities to the children too. People feel they are part of something they are responsible for.

19. “Say I love you”

How do you expect your home to be loving if you refuse to say loving words?

20. “Celebrate special days”

Birthdays, Anniversaries, Graduation days, the return home from a long period of travel, the coming back home from being admitted in hospital, holidays; all those are moments you can use to unite the family.

21. “Go out on dates”

Leave the house sometimes and go out on a date with your spouse or as a family, when you come back home you will have plenty to remember and smile about. Dates break the monotony of being boxed in the house day after day.

22. “Sometimes turn off technology”

Technology is good, but also a threat to the quality of relationship in the home. Sometimes turn off the TV, the computer, the tablet, the phone and have quality family time.

To many times, we change who we are to get the attention of others, but not with God!

God loves you for who you are. Not for what you do. Not for what you possess and not for where you live. Those things do not concern Him.

When He created you, He created you in His love and no matter what you do, say or become, He will always love you for you, so you don’t have to change to impress Him or get His attention…He’s already aware of who you are and He already loves you for you!

May the grace of God keep you and the love of Christ Jesus forever rest upon you from this day forth!…Amen

You know it is the Holiday season when nearly everywhere you look you find colorful advertisements boasting “great deals.” Looking at the top of today’s paper my attention was drawn to big bold letters screaming, “Buy One Get One Free.” On the next page, a similarly attentive ad with the headline, “Buy One Get Two Free!”

Yet in all these good deals, there is one deal that continues to stand out. A deal that has stood out for nearly 2,000 years, and a deal that doesn’t require rain-checks or even getting up at 4 in the morning. If we were to give this deal a similar title, I’m sure it would read something like, “By One, Billions Free!”

This deal, of course, is salvation through Christ. Freedom from Satan’s power, freedom from eternal punishment, and as a bonus, a personal relationship with God Himself (John 8:36). In essence, it is the only deal that let’s you start over and be something even better (2 Corinthians 5:17)… And the best part is, it’s already been paid for! This amazing, life changing deal was paid for by God Himself, who came down to die so that you would not have to [spiritually] (Romans 5:8).

And all this deal requires is you “cashing in the coupon.” Like going to the store and buying something you do not have, all you have to do is realize that without God you have nothing… and without God you cannot be freed from your sins (Romans 3:23). And once you realize this, all you have to do is ask God to forgive you, and change your life because you know that Jesus has already paid for your sins. Just like that coupon, all you have to do is ask the cashier to take it, knowing by faith it is good, and you’re going to get a great deal… a life saver (Ephesians 2:8-9).

If you have not accepted this deal, I would encourage you to contact me personally Even if you have doubts, or think this deal is “too good to be true,” I would love to talk to you.

If you have already accepted this deal, then you know how much joy it has brought into your life (Romans 5:1). You know how amazing it is to have a personal relationship with a God who loves you so much, that He died to save you. This Christmas season, I ask you to share this “Great Deal” with others unashamedly (Romans 1:16); just like you would a great coupon in a newspaper. I ask you to share this wonderful coupon, the Gospel, with anyone and everyone, so that they too may know the joy that fills your life (Mark 16:15).

Jesus Lives to Bear Our Sins

In my daily Bible reading I have been reading in Leviticus about the various sacrifices for fellowship offerings, guilt offerings, and wave offerings.  Today, I read about the Day of Atonement in the 16th chapter:

‘”Aaron shall bring the goat whose lot falls to the LORD and sacrifice it for a sin offering. But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the LORD to be used for making atonement by sending it into the desert as a scapegoat.” Leviticus 16:9-10

“When Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting and the altar, he shall bring forward the live goat. He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites—all their sins—and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert.”  Leviticus 16:20-22

OK, so, in the process of making atonement for the nation of Israel the priest takes two goats one is sacrificed and the blood of this goat is used to make atonement for the Most Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar.  Then, he takes the live goat and lays both hands on it’s head and confesses over it all the wickedness and rebellion and sins of the Israelites.  In doing this, the Bible says all the sin is put on the goat.  Then the goat is released into the desert.

Of the two goats, the one that takes on the sins is the live goat.  Both goats are necessary.  The goat that is sacrificed makes it all possible by providing a way into the presence of God in the Most Holy place.  But, it is the living goat that bears the sins.

6a0111685b6406970c0111685c26d7970cTo fulfill God’s plan for our redemption Jesus had to die to bridge the gap between God and man.  His death allows us to enter the Most Holy Place and be in the presence of God.  But, it is his resurrection that allows Him to bear the burden of sin for a world sinners.  We have a relationship with God through Jesus’ death.  We have freedom from sin through his life.

Before I finish this post let’s consider this passage:

“But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead?  If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.  And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.  More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either.  And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.”

1 Corinthians 15:12-17

In that last verse Paul says, “…if Christ has not been raised, your faith if futile; you are still in your sins.”  Jesus had to rise again, like the goat that was allowed to live (the scapegoat); He had to be alive to bear our sins.

Please leave a comment and share your thoughts about this post.

Blessings in Jesus.

Who the Holy Spirit is and What He Does

Introduction: a look at the word of God reveals to us the names of the Holy Spirit through His multiple personalities. In Genesis 1:1-3, He is the first of the Godhead introduced to us as the Spirit of God. We know from the Bible that God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit [1John 5:7, Matthew 3:16-17]. He is on earth to accomplish a mission we shall be looking at in more details in the course of this month. According to the Lord Jesus Christ, His mission among other things is to bring conviction to the world with the aim of saving mankind and his environment and reveal God and His mind to us. See John 16:7-13, Rom.8:19-22 and Acts 3:19-21.

Who then is the Holy Spirit?

To understand who He is, we have to go back to God’s word to find our answers. From the scriptures, we are made to know that He is:

  1. A person described in the male gender. In John 16:13, the Lord Jesus Christ gives us this insight when He refers to Him as follows: “When He the Spirit of truth is come, He shall…” and went on to describe His mission to us. In talking about His purpose on Earth from John 16:8-15, the Lord refers to Him as a person in the male gender. Until you recognize Him as a person, you will not be able to establish a working relationship with you and that would be very devastating considering what His purpose is on earth in relation to our fulfilling God’s purpose for us.
  1. He is God: As God, He has all the power and backing of the Godhead. Whenever He speaks to us, He speaks on behalf of the Father and the Son. Like we saw earlier, He is the first of the Godhead introduced to us in the bible. In Gen.1:3, we see Him hovering over the face of the deep before the father could issue the command that triggered the recreation of the Earth as it is today. See 1John 5:7 and Matthew 3:16-17.
  2. He is also known as The Lord: When we compare the places when He ministered in the Old Testament and some of what was reported about those same texts in the New Testament, this truth is made very evident. For instance, when we compare Hebrews 10:15-17 with Ezekiel 36:22-28, we see that Ezekiel was prophesying what was to be discussed in our Hebrew text here as having been fulfilled. Ezekiel refers to Him as The Lord God while Paul calls Him The Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost.
  3. He is the author of the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation: As a Spirit, He could only work on Earth through human vessels. This is why we are told that He moved on Holy men to put the scriptures together. He is therefore, the most authentic source of bible interpretation. See 2Peter 1:14-21 where Peter left his legacy affirming the authority of the word of God, He makes us realize that He witnessed God Speaking and that Holy men of Old also heard God speak to them and documented them in writing which now makes up the scriptures. Also, Apostle Paul in 2Tim.3:16 makes us see that the Scriptures were not original with men but that they were given to men by the Holy Spirit to show us how to live well. This is why the Bible is God’s manual for our lives and environment.

Why is the Holy Spirit Here?

The Holy Spirit is on Earth today for the following reasons:

  1. To bring Conviction to the world: He convicts the world of sin showing us that we are all sinners and lost and hell bound and in need of salvation          [John 16:7-13; Rom.3:23; 6:23]. Then, He convicts us of righteousness that could only be found in Christ Jesus because we were not eyewitnesses to his death, burial and resurrection. Even many who witness it like Pilate could not understand it. All to the understanding given to Apostle Paul like the one in 1Cor.15:1-5 came by the revelation of the Holy Spirit. See Gal.1:12; 2:2 and Eph.3:3. Also, when People sought to know what they must do to be saved, the Holy Spirit used the disciples to show them. See Acts 2:37-39 and Acts 16:31. This is his ministry of showing the world true righteousness. See also Ephesians 2:8-10. Finally, He shows us the defeat of our archenemy and that we need not fear him anymore as all power has been given to the Lord Jesus Christ including the power he once stole from Adam. This is what gives us the audacity to bind him and cast him out. See Matthew 28:18; Mark 16;17 and Revelation 12:7-11 and 20:10.
  2. To give us vision: Vision is God’s revelation of our purpose to us: Like we already know, a life without a purpose is a meaningless life. In every right thinking person; is a desire to know why they are on earth and the only person that can reveal it to us is our manufacturer – God. This is why Jesus said He would take of Him and the father and show it to us. Then He added that He would show us things to come. See John 16:13. The importance of vision for each of us cannot be overemphasized. It is what gives us direction and the proper pursuit of it brings out the best in us. Every one without a vision lacks beauty and dignity; they perish. See Prov.29:18. Vision is the compass for life that enables us to know where to go. As we receive and follow divine instructions on a consistent basis, we will get there. The example of Joseph is very instructive here. See his story in Genesis 36-42. He knew his calling and lived a life that honored God until He was standing in his dream.
  3. To bring us all the revelation required to fulfill our purpose: Every time we read the bible, we need the Holy Spirit to open our understanding to help us see the secrets embedded in the scriptures. Jesus said He will teach us all things in John 14:26 [all things means exactly that and includes everything about life including our profession]. It is an understanding of these mysteries that provides us with the wisdom to master our world. If it is not given to us to know the mysteries of the kingdom, we cannot know them on our own. It is the Holy Spirit that gives us to know. See Mark 4:11, Ps.127:1, Luke 24:13-31. Without the revelation from God to pursue our God given purpose, our vision will look like a lie because it would never find expression as we would not know what to do to bring it to pass. This is why the preacher says in Ecclesiastes 10:15 that the labour of the foolish brings them weariness as they do not know how to get to the city.
  4. To help us with the power we need on the journey: He does this by filling our hearts with the Joy of the Lord. Peter refers to this joy as joy unspeakable full of glory. It is joy that provides us with the energy required to make it to the end of our journey on earth. See 1Peter 1:8, Neh.8:10.

However, this blessing is meant for those who have entered into the covenant relationship of the New Birth with the Lord. The bible says that Christ in you is the hope of glory and this mystery was hidden from the foundation of the world for our glory. They are not hidden from us but for us to be able to discover them. If you desire this new birth experience so as to take advantage of what God has given us, you can do so right away by saying the following prayer out loud in faith and you will be saved and granted access to the mysteries of God that would enable you manifest His glory on earth. When Jesus was about to round off His mission on earth, he said he had brought glory to God by fulfilling His purpose. See John 17:4. If you want to be able to say the same thing when the time comes, please say the following prayer out loud and God would honor your faith:

Heavenly Father,

Have mercy on me a sinner. Today, I believe that Jesus died for me and you raised Him from the dead for my Justification. I therefore declare that Jesus Christ is my Saviour and Lord and from today, I renounce the fatherhood of Satan and embrace Jesus Christ as my Saviour and Lord. Thank you for this father in Jesus’ name!

Remain on top of your challenges in Jesus’ name!
